Meet Paul Harrison from Mainstream Aquaculture
Australian barramundi farms are located all across Australia, and this time we got to chat with one of the co-founders of Mainstream Aquaculture, Dr Paul Harrison. Paul is the chief scientist of Mainstream Aquaculture, and his vision was to help feed the world with delicious, yet sustainably produced fish.
Mainstream operates three barramundi farms and two hatcheries in Australia. The first farm is situated in Etty Bay, in the stunning Tropical North Queensland. The second farm is in Killaloe, also in the Tropical North Queensland region. The third farm is based in Wyndham, near Melbourne. Each farm has been hand-picked with each location providing a distinct and unique tasting quality on their barramundi.
What’s your favourite thing about barra farming?
My favourite thing about barra farming is not just the process itself, but enjoying the delicious barramundi as a meal and seeing the faces of people who are instantly surprised when they try it for the first time.
What’s your fondest/funniest memory working with barramundi?
My fondest memory would have to be when I was helping our team commission a new automated harvesting setup that has stainless steel pipes that moved barramundi from the harvest machine to the purging tank. I decided to look in the pipe as there was a stream of water coming out but no fish. Right when I looked a fish came through and I ended up with a black eye!
What is special about your fish?
At Mainstream our barramundi is cared for throughout the lifecycle. Our gentle harvesting process ensures minimal, guaranteeing the highest quality fish for your enjoyment.
Why and when did you first start working with barramundi?
I first started working with barramundi in 1998 and co-founded Mainstream in 2001. I love working with barramundi as it is a great product and well suited for aquaculture.
What’s it like working at Mainstream?
Working at Mainstream is very exciting. It feels great and rewarding to be part of a rapidly growing business in an industry with amazing upside potential.
