Meet Jason Clark from Humpty Doo Barramundi
Ready to dive into the deep waters of working at an Aussie barramundi farm? We had a good chat with Jason Clark from Humpty Doo Barramundi, to get the inside scoop on barra farming in the Northern Territory.
Humpty Doo Barramundi is located in the Northern Territory, halfway between Darwin and Kakadu National Park. It is a family-owned business that provides delicious barramundi while supporting the environment through sustainable aquaculture practices.
What’s your favourite thing about barra farming?
Working with barramundi is a lifestyle and less of a Job. One of my favourite things about barra farming is the people you meet. Combined with the thrill and exciting way of life in the Northern Territory.
What has been your biggest success?
My biggest success is being able to use my experience in the farming industry and being able to implement those skills to assist in improving the barra industry. Additionally, learning the skills and gaining the confidence to handle saltwater crocodiles is very special!
Can you share with us the funniest/craziest story you have working with barramundi?
One of the craziest experiences was accidently swimming with not one but two saltwater crocodile’s while carrying out maintenance on some paddlewheels (lucky the big fellas can’t get beyond the fence).
What is special about your fish?
At Humpty Doo Barramundi, we use a unique bioremediation wetland system guaranteeing our fish are always kept in the best water and environment ensuring that they are always healthy, happy and taste great.
Why and when did you first start working with barramundi?
I started working with barramundi five years ago in Northern Queensland before shifting to the Northern Territory in 2021. I was attracted to the challenge of working with a new species in Australia. Raising a family in this part of the world offers plenty of opportunity as well.
What’s your fondest/funniest memory working with barramundi?
Pond farms in the wet season can be very unforgiving, we use lots of heavy machinery and trucks, and it’s always entertaining when embarrassed staff get bogged down and need to be rescued. Red faces and a few jokes are always good for moral.
What’s it like working at Humpty Doo Barramundi?
Humpty Doo Barramundi is a unique family-owned business. It’s not your average job, I’m surrounded by beautiful fish, amazing people, and a beautiful environment. Sure, there are moments when the job can be hot and sweaty and not every day is fun but the rewarding days and the fantastic people you’ll meet along the way make it all worthwhile!
