Meet Tarun Richards from Humpty Doo Barramundi
From the ‘top end’ to down south in Victoria, our Australian barramundi farms are based in some of the most pristine places in the country.
Our Australian barramundi farmers strive to raise the highest quality barramundi to the plate using sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.
To discover more about the Aussie barramundi on our plates and where it is from, we spoke with Tarun Richards from Australian barramundi farm, Humpty Doo Barramundi.
Humpty Doo Barramundi farm is in the Northern Territory, the spiritual home of our native fish. It is a family owned farm and distributer of premium Australian saltwater barramundi, and it is loved by chefs across the country and home cooks.
Humpty Doo Barramundi started by Bob Richards more than 20 years ago. Today, Bob’s son, Dan manages the farm with wife, Tarun, their growing family in tow. As you can imagine, it’s a big job.
We sat down with Tarun to chat about what it’s really like working on a barra farm!
INTERVIEW WITH TARUN RICHARDS, HUMPTY DOO BARRAMUNDI
AB: What is the environment like at Humpty Doo Barramundi and how does this affect quality?
Tarun: Our farm is in the barramundi's native environment, on the floodplains adjacent the pristine tidal Adelaide River. We believe that growing the Barramundi in its preferred environment results in a happier fish and premium quality flavour. We are surrounded by incredible national parks, reserves and stations. We’re regularly visited by buffalo and wetland birds like jabiru and sea eagles.
AB: What does the farm do to protect its surrounding environment for a sustainable future?
Tarun: We are a fifth-generation Territory family and we have been blessed with the unique environment surrounding us. Over half of our farm is a saltwater wetland created after years of trial and error. Water leaves our ponds and is gravity fed through the wetland system where native saltwater grasses remove the nutrients so the water can be reused on the farm again and again. This means we can maintain a high-quality saltwater environment for our barramundi and we rarely need to discharge water off the farm.
AB: What are the barramundi fed?
Tarun: We believe you are what you eat, and so are our Barra! We feed them a diet as close to nature as possible from a feed produced in Queensland. Our feed never contains antibiotics, hormones or artificial growth promoters and the fish content is harvested from sustainable fish stocks.
