Barra is the Lean, Mean, Meat Alternative of Your Dreams
We all know Aussie’s love their seafood, with reasons for this ranging from seafood’s delicious taste to health benefits of including fish and shellfish in their diets.
Until recently, facts about Australian farmed barramundi’s nutritional value and health benefits, as compared to other protein sources and other seafoods, were not widely known.
But the Fisheries Research & Development Corporation recently funded a project to assess the nutritional value of Australian farmed barramundi. And the results are great news for everyone who wants to enjoy the health benefits as well as enjoy the great flavour. Here is what this new research uncovered:
Australian farmed barramundi vs human nutritional requirements
- A 100g Australian farmed barramundi fillet provides between 2x-4.5x the recommended daily intake of Omega-3 suggested for a healthy diet
- Australian farmed barramundi is also an excellent source of selenium, potassium, phosphorus and chromium.
Australian farmed barramundi vs common meats consumed in Australia:
- Australian farmed barra contains less sodium than meat
- Australian farmed barra contains more beneficial long chain fatty acids which are being increasingly associated with overall good health. Aussie barra contains around four-fold more long chain fatty acids than grass-fed beef and lamb, eight-fold more than pork and 21-fold more than chicken!
- Australian farmed barra contains less saturated fat than red or white meat. Australian farmed barra contains half the saturated fat levels of chicken or beef, less than half the levels of pork and a fifth of the saturated fat level found in lamb.
Australian farmed barramundi vs commonly available seafood in Australia
- Australian farmed barramundi has more omega-3 than wild barramundi
- Australian farmed barramundi is a richer source of monounsaturated fat than wild caught snapper
- The levels of fatty acids in Australian farmed barra were similar to Wild Barramundi, Wild Saddletrail and Goldband Snapper
- Australian farmed barra had 3 times higher levels of fatty acids than Nile perch and 16 times higher levels than Basa catfish.
To wrap up, the research has shown us that Australian farmed barramundi is an excellent natural source of Omega-3 fatty acids, Omega-9 while also being high in protein, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, selenium and zinc.
There are clear advantages in choosing barramundi over meat at mealtimes; Aussie barra has a lower proportion of saturated fat, is a richer source of Omega-3 and selenium and has less sodium. So what are you waiting for? Ask For Aussie Barra today.
